Diamond Jewelry Carats

Below We address some of the key issues regarding Diamond Carat Weight. A careful reading of this material could make a big difference in how you think about Carats.

Diamonds are measured in Carats. One carat equals 200 milligrams, or .0071 ounces.

Diamonds are also measured in grains, a diamond a one carat diamond is a four grain stone. The word Carat comes from the word carob. The carob bean grows on a tree in the Mediterranean. In times past, if a diamond weighed the same as a carob bean, it was one carob, or one carat.

Where Carob trees do not grow, for example in the far east, rice was used to measure the weight of a diamond. If a diamond weighs the same as four grains of rice, it is referred to as four grains ? or one carat as we say now. Most diamond purchases are for diamonds that are 1/3 of a carat.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I'm sure that just a little more will help all the facts will fall into place.

See how much you can learn about Carat when you take a little time to read a well-researched article? Don't miss out on the rest of this great information.

A one carat brilliant cut diamond will be about the size of a small pea. A one point stone isn't much larger than a pinhead and has fewer facets.

The value of Diamonds is also decided by their transparency & colour. Buyers with limited resources can find a larger diamond of excellent quality by selecting from diamonds graded slightly lower in terms of colour and clarity

Be careful when buying diamonds that are already set or mounted in a piece of jewellery. If more than one diamond is used in the piece, the tag on the jewelry will give the CTW or Carat Total Weight ? it does not tell you the carat weight of each stone. Multiple diamonds should be carefully matched. Ask a jeweller for the carat weight of the largest diamond in a piece to gauge the true value of the diamonds.

I hope that reading the above information was both enjoyable and educational for you. Your learning process should be ongoing--the more you understand about any subject, the more you will be able to share with others.

Knowing enough about Diamonds to make solid, informed choices cuts down on the fear factor. If you apply what you've just learned about Diamonds, you should have nothing to worry about.
